Flawless UX is not a privilege, it's a necessity.

Let's review how we can improve the user experience in some of the items which we see and use everyday.

Example 1: Amazon Delivery Alert

  1. Let's focus on the subject of the email first and see how we can improve it. Current Subject - "Delivered: Your Amazon.com order #XXX"

  • Question: How many times do you remember the order number of an online order? That too if it's 17 digits long :) Order # is something that you should always avoid in the subject line of an email.

  • The word "Your" is unnecessary here. I am not going to get my neighbors order. So, it's not really adding any value to the subject.

  • The sender of an email is easily visible when we receive an email. I already know that the email is from Amazon. Writing again your "Amazon.com" order is overkill.

  • It would have added value if they added what is delivered in the subject. Example: "Pete's coffee pods"

Updated email subject:

"Delivered: Pete's coffee pods"

  1. Let's shift the to email subject and how we can improve it.

  • Email starts with the word "Amazon" followed by some dots. I can't think of any value this is adding here.

  • The first line of the email "Your package is delivered". The word "Your" here is not pointing out anything specific. I order several items online and don't remember what I ordered. Replacing "Your" with the actual item name would have made more sense.

  • Immediately after that "How was your delivery?" with some ugly big hyperlinks. The hyperlink could have hidden been neatly hidden behind a thumbs up and thumbs down icon.

  • The third item is to track your package. Why would I track my package if it's already delivered? What would have made more sense here is to link to the order details.

  • Then comes order info. Order info again has nothing that really points out what was delivered. It just says 2 items and the order #. No information on what is that item.

  • Also, order information should be on top of the email instead of the bottom.

  • "How was the delivery?" should be on the bottom of the email instead of the top.

  • Email contains no image/graphics. It could have been more interesting with some images added to it.
